Those who know me have had to listen to a fair amount of lamenting the lack of shopping here in Monterey. Let me just say that while I'm not a big city girl... I'm not a small town girl either. I would likely never survive living in New York City or Los Angeles... I know that! But moving to a small town like Monterey was quite the culture shock. I cried the first few months... and then it happened. I discovered that we had a 2nd Target... and it wasn't ghetto like the other one!!! OH HAPPY DAY!!! It was one of my first few smiles after moving here.
What's a girl to do??? Catalog shop. One of my friends has been introducing me to various catalogs... and one them is Ballards. While I love looking through Ballard's catalog, there's no way I can afford most of it.
SIDENOTE: Apparently I'm not the only woman living here who has been driven to catalog shopping. I've heard husband's refer to Potterybarn and other such catalogs as "Housewife Porn". LOL!
Back to my point. We don't have a fireplace or any shelves downstairs to display pictures... but I did have a bare wall in the dining room just crying out to be decorated. I fell in love with these shelves:
But at a price of $110+ tax and shipping... I just couldn't justify spending that much money for a shelf. However, I do have quite the crafty husband who has been enjoying 3 weeks off from school and looking for projects... so I decided to ask him if he could build it for me. The next morning he was at Home Depot (honestly, I think he'll do anything for me if I let him go to Home Depot and drool over all the tools)... and here's the end product!
Ok... I realize it's not decorated with pretty stuff like the catalog picture (and those institution white walls add so much!)... but I love it! It looks so much like the one from the catalog (but for about 1/3 the price)! I can't wait to decorate it up now!

wow! that's great!
Ok you totally made me laugh with the doing anything as long as he can drool over tools at Home Depot. Lowes is Brian's latest favorite store and we can't seem to leave there without dropping at least $100. And be thankful you have 2 Targets...Lake Chuck has only 1.

Oh wow! Those are awesome!
love it!!! I went to Target today- one of my last trips for 2 years... :(
Love the "Believe" decoration :)
wow, he did a great job! I have a crafty husband too, he built me a pb knock-off shelf, too..it's one of those long ones with a small lip on top, in the catalog they have picture frames sitting on them. He built me one, but not as deep, which looks nicer I think. I should take a photo and put it on my blog.
I love pouring through all the catalogs, but I buy mostly from Target, ha!
